THE PICKLEBOWL

The third USAPA-sanctioned tournament in the Desert will be played at the Palm Desert Resort (next door) this Thursday through Supper Bowl Sunday (hence the “PickleBowl” reference). It’s an opportunity to see some of the best pickleball available, with a number of national champs playing, such as our former Asst. Tennis Pro Marcin Rozpedski, who recently won the Men’s Open Single Championship. On Wednesday, you can check http://www.pickleballtournaments.com  for more information on play times, etc.  If you do attend,  remember there’s no kibitzing allowed as your blog/writer (me, who is injured and withdrew from this action) is a referee-in-training at this event.

See you on the courts.

THIS WEEK’S PLAY…….

The week opened today with our second inter-club pickleball match against a talented Andalusia team  We played three  rounds of mixed doubles and despite some of their experienced talent, it was a close result. Great hospitality from the Andalusia crew.

Open play and clinic this week should give us a chance to further hone our skills for the next inter-club challenge:

Monday (1/25) @ 3-5pm – open play

Thursday (1/28) – our pro, Randy Berg, has a one-hour clinic for beginners @ 2pm (signup thru the Tennis Desk).

The Battle at Andalusia…..

The inter-club pickleball match with Andalusia today was a challenge, but a fun-filled event at the same time. Here’s a couple of pics of the happy warriors. We didn’t record the scores, so we called it a draw. Congratulations for the team of the Chapmans, Graniks, Lefebres, Paula Devries and Jim Archibald.

Sunday’s Match with Andalusia….

Hello team,  I’m waiting for the Andalusia captain to give me the names of their players, so they can be inserted below.  However, based on those “signed up” to play, I’ve drafted the Order of Play for our side below.  You’ll note that there’s two rounds of three games each, like last Sunday, but both mixed doubles. This is because I’m told they have 6 women and only 2 men (I was also told that a couple of their women can “hang” very well with the men ).  Also,  if one or two more of us want to play Sunday, we can gladly include them in the play (see footnote), so  use “Leave a Reply” below if you’d like to play, and we’ll try to fit you in.  Our goal is to have the right number so everyone plays at least 4 games, and maybe 6.

Many of Sunday’s players are playing in our Saturday open play at 3pm. We can hone our games for what may well be a tough match Sunday.

THIS WEEK’S PLAY…..

The week opened today with our first inter-club pickleball match ever against a deep Trilogy Club team (we had 9 players and they brought 18 of the 130 pickleball  players at their club). We played a round (3 games) of mixed doubles and then a second round (3 games) of men’s doubles and women’s doubles.  Despite their numbers and some experienced talent, it was a close result, with virtually all twenty or so of us repairing to JK’s for a joint team luncheon to celebrate  the vigorous competition.

Open play and clinic this week should give us a chance to further hone our skills:

Monday (1/18) @ 3-5pm – open play

Thursday (1/21) – our pro, Randy Berg, has a one-hour clinic for beginners @ 2pm (signup thru the Tennis Desk).

Thursday Eve (1/21) @ 5:30-7pm – open play.

Saturday (1/23) @ 3-5pm – open play.

We have the first inter-club match of the season this Sunday (1/17) at 10am on our courts against Trilogy. Trilogy would like to bring as many as 13 players if we can more or less match their numbers. So it’s important to let us know ASAP if you’d like to play this Sunday, and we’ll try to accommodate as many as feasible.  Just indicate your interest via the “Leave a Reply” comment box below. Those that we can’t fit in will have a first chance to play in our next match against Andalusia (see below)

Andalusia Match

Originally this match against the Andalusia club in La Quinta was scheduled for Wednesday, 1/20, but had to be rescheduled due to both clubs having too few signups (we only had one besides Nancy and me). The new date is Sunday, 1/24, at 10am at the Andalusia courts in La Quinta. This should be a challenging matchup, so please let us know your availability and interest via the “Leave a Reply” box below as soon as possible.

It would be great to have you participate, putting our pickleball “community” in the forefront of support for our people’s people. Check with the club to donate and attend.

Inter-club Pickleball Play

We’ve been accepted into the fourteen-club pickleball “League.”  While there’s no club winners or losers, trophies, or awards luncheons, there is the competitive fun of inter-club play with “those others” at least twice a month through March (and probably beyond).  In January, we’ve scheduled a match with Trilogy at our club on Sunday, 1/17, at 10am, and another at Andalucia on Wednesday, 1/20, at 11am.  We need at least 8 players for each day to play mixed, men’s and women’s doubles and can work in a few more players each day, if needed. We’ll try to accommodate as many of our currently active players as possible, so everyone gets to play as much as feasible.

So please let us know ASAP your interest (as a single or pair) in playing either one or both of these days. Just send a “Leave A Reply” message  to let us know when you plan to play. Please get back to one of the Dinking Committee members below if you have any questions.

See you on the courts.
