Tomorrow and then Sunday ??????

Some have asked if we’re having organized play tomorrow. “Yes” and “Yes!”

However, in order to accommodate those who might like to take in the pro mixed doubles semi-final and gold matches at The Lakes, let’s plan on starting at 9 am tomorrow, rather than 10am. Sunday will be a loaded day at The Lakes tournament, with the pro Men’s doubles being featured, as well as being  a lot hotter day. So, let’s start organized play Sunday at 9am too. Hope this is satisfying to all.

Oh, I’m sorry to report that Marcin Rozpedski, our former tennis pro and national champ in singles, lost today in the gold medal pro singles match to a much younger Florida pro, Kyle Yeates (Marcin had to have medical aid near the end of the match). So it’s all the more reason to take in the Pro Men’s Doubles final Sunday, when Marcin should be playing with Morgan Evans from the local Shadow Mountain CC (they’re ranked #2 nationally).

Last chance and last chance…

Folks,

There’s pickleball supreme next door at The Lakes CC this weekend. It starts tomorrow with pro singles the highlight (remember our former pro, Marcin Rozpedski’s the national champ) and then pro mixed doubles on Saturday and pro men’s and women’s  doubles on Sunday (along with little known, but IRCC’s own, Smith and Yeaton in the amatuers).  It’s the last chance to see top pro pickleball in the Desert this season.

It’s also the last chance to leave a donation check in the envelope at the Tennis Center desk for the Making a Difference program of scholarships for our employees’ kids, from we pickleballers, as discussed below.

Indian Ridge has a rich history as a CV club that is very active in charitable giving.  We have an opportunity as a close knit community to demonstrate our appreciation to the people that have actively enhanced and maintained our facility, perhaps now the best club pickleball venue in the Valley.  We are hoping that members or the pickleball community will make a donation LARGE OR SMALL, that we will present to the Scholarship Program as a single “IR PICKLEBALL COMMUNITY” donation.  Please do not confuse this with donations for the events many of you have so generously made to attend the Weekend events in April.

The Scholarship Fund is an extremely meaningful way to thank our employees for their loyal service to us and in many cases provides an opportunity to a young person to attend college who would otherwise not have the ability to do so. If you read some of the thank you letters on the Scholarship Fund web site (indianridgescholarship.com), you will see how important this financial help is to these deserving young people.

The fitness desk staff will be accepting donations for the Fund.  Please make your checks out to Desert Community Foundation, which is the low-cost, non-profit organization that administers the funds and works with the students.  The website contains information about DCF should you have any questions, or feel free to contact David Garfinkel at 516 528-1453, or garf345@gmail.com

Thanks to All

We did go “bananas” and more…..

Folks,

We’d have to admit that Saturday’s inter-club with both Trilogy/Polo Club and Sun City was a rousing affair (although it started out calmly with photos taken – as you see above). Players were popping in and out at game ends and it had a touch of anarchy at times (the TPC captain even jump into the wrong court game). But it was fun, in a loony sort of way. Next time we’ll not be as generous with late comers and set some limits (like a maximum of 16 from a club or 10 when doing a three-club match as this one).  Anyways, thanks to Kim and Susan for all the bananas and other goodies. Well done.

There’s  been continued interest in pickleball under the lights, so we’re scheduling one more this Thursday eve at 6pm. Hope you can all make it. Let us know below if you will.

Finally, remember that The Lakes CC next to us is hosting the first Pro/am tournament in the Desert this coming weekend, featuring national champs like Marcin Rozpedski, Morgan Evans and Scott Burr, whose exciting play we enjoyed at the exhibition here three weeks ago. They’ll be playing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Some of us are serving as linespeople for the pro matches and playing in the amateur section. So come on over (schedule of daily events listed in the flyer copy below). We’ll attempt to blog specific match times as they develop during those three days.

Hey Lines People…………

Folks,

A while ago, we posted the request for people to call lines for pro matches at The Lakes CC tournament on March 31-April 2. Just a couple of us showed interest in doing so. Now we have received another appeal, with more detail about what’s involved and some options, including the idea of having an Indian Ridge “team”.  Seems an interesting approach, so we could do some good service as a team and maybe rotate some of us in for those who might not be available all three days or certain times on any given day (plus we can hang out together, watching the matches during off times or enjoying those meals they offer).     We get to see exciting world-class pro pickleball up close and get a tee shirt in the bargain.   If we have enough participation, probably  we can arrange for the brief training session and the court assignments at times that work for us. So, read the deal below and let us know below if you will join our “team” of lines people, representing Indian Ridge at this first pro tournament.   If you have any questions, we’ll get answers, but let us know your interest now. Thanks “team”

Thank you for reaching out .  I understand you have a few people available, and are about to send a note out for more.  I am connecting you directly to Dottie Gough, her most recent message below:

We need lines people for Friday, March 31Saturday, April 1Sunday, April 2.  We need am & pm shifts.  We are hoping to get enough so volunteers will only have to work three 20 minute matches.  Of course they can work more but I ‘m worried about the heat.  We will provide chairs, T-shirts and a meal. They can be put in a 4 man team or even form their own  team with their friends.
Also copying Byron Freso – he has been coordinating the Certified Ref piece, and will advise on linesperson training.

Going “Bananas” on Saturday!

Folks,

Wow, we asked for a couple of players to bring bananas and grapes for the Saturday inter-club matches and three times that number generously responded. If we go on with this, we’ll look like a very big street-side fruit stand between the courts. So, we drew straws and both Kim and Stan/Susan won.*  Dave Ross, Beth Keno, and Dave Garfinkel can stand down (thank you very much!); you will be on our future snack-provider list.

*If each of you brings 10 bananas and a good bunch of grapes, that’ll do it.

Saturday’s Inter-Club match….

Folks,

As announced, this Saturday at 10am we will host two clubs , Sun City/Palm Desert and Trilogy/Polo Club, for some inter-club pickleball fun. Here are the names of those who have so far “signed up ” to play (hope we haven’t missed anyone and remembered the verbal requests) . Please let us know if there’s any change or you’d like to play (we have a couple more openings).

Kim, Rod, Dave R., Dave G., Dave B., Sue V., Jon V., Clark S. Nancy S., Susan B., Stan K., Beth K., Jim G.

Oh, as we’ll have up to 20 guest players and about 16 of our own, we’ll need help with the snacks. What has worked well in the past is bananas and grapes. Can we ask three of you to volunteer to each bring a dozen bananas and a good bunch of grapes (cost about $5)? Please say “yes” and let me know.

See y’all Saturday (and for an evening match tomorrow at 6pm?). Weather should be very nice both times.

Evening play and another opportunity…

Folks,

This unusual hot weather has got to stop. Wednesday appears to be when the cool down  begins. So, it’s proposed that we play another evening time – Tuesday at 6pm – until the heat let’s up (of course, Monday at 2pm is still an option for those with  strong constitutions). For those who haven’t tried the lights, the last Thursday’s trial evening play worked out very well.  Some even wandered up to the Club bar after…. others may do so this Tuesday???

The “other opportunity” I mentioned is being a linesperson for the pro matches at The Lakes CC on March 31-April 2. We’ve only had a couple in our group respond when we posted the message below. Please read it again and let us know with a comment below if you want in; we have to let the organizers know this week. Oh, and you must be able to attend the training session on  Thursday, March 30, in order to participate.

“As you probably know, The Lakes CC (next door) is hosting the first prop division pickleball tournament in the Desert in  three weeks time (March 31-April 2).  It should be a great time to watch the best pros do their best playing.  One sure way to get the best seat for this event is to participate (not being a pro and all) is to be a lines person.  Here below is the appeal for just that. Let us know (with a reply below) if you want in and we’ll get more information to you.”

“The PPF is working in collaboration with the USAPA to advance the sport through a focus on competition and player support for the highest level of play.  We are currently working with Marcin Rozpedski with The Lakes Country Club to host a Pro division at his upcoming Spring Fling event held March 31 to April 2.  Many of the top players in the country are traveling here for this inaugural event – it promises to be a very exciting weekend!
To ensure the highest quality of event, and so that the pros can focus on their play – we intend to have linesman on every match, not just medal matches. I am hoping I can enlist your help to work with pickleball clubs in the area to provide volunteers on these dates. We’ll need approx 50 volunteers that would be a part of something very special.  Byron and Marsha  Freso (USAPA Certified referee) would conduct a training on Mar 30 to ensure all linesman are comfortable. They would be teamed up with USAPA Certified referees for each of the matches.”

More coming events ……..

Hi again pickleballers,

Sorry we forgot a couple of other events in the post just published. First, we have an interclub league match on Saturday, March 25, at 10am. It’s with the combined forces of Sun City – Palm Desert and the Trilogy Polo Club, so we’ll have all courts going full blast. Please let us know if you are available to play that day.

Second, as announced before with the flyer below, during the following weekend (March 31-April 3) there will be the first Pro/Am pickleball tournament in the desert at The Lakes CC.  The best pros in the States and world will be playing for “big bucks,” so you’ll want to take as much of it in as possible. There will be a clinic with Marcin Rospedski et al on the day before (Thursday).

Coming events and such…

Hi Pickleballers,

We’ve been dealing with the hot spell as best we can. Last evening,  6pm until about 7:30pm, we had a couple of courts going full blast. It was cool under the lights  and all appeared to have fun.  The idea was to test 6pm rather than 2pm in order to beat the heat on hot days, like we have this week. While the weather forecast is for cooling down into the high 70s on Wednesday next week, suggesting we keep with the current M/W/F 2pm organized play times for a while longer,  maybe we should have a regular evening organized play time once or twice a week, say Tuesday and/or Thursday. Let us know below if you have comments and suggestions in this regard.

Oh, also let us know  if we should have some stimulating music while playing and whether we should all bring snacks and adult beverages.  As an add-on or alternative, some or all of us could repair to the Club bar for the bar menu and libations after play (we understand that golf shorts of men and Bermudas for women, and collared shirts for all, are OK all evening in the bar).

We’ll appreciate your input.

The Good Cause is calling…..

Hi Indian Ridge Pickleballers,

You may recall a message we sent a while ago about the “Making a Difference” fund for our employees’ youngsters and how we pickleballers might like to contribute as a group . So here’s an important follow-up message from the-good-cause-spokesman and our fellow pickleballer:

Indian Ridge has a rich history as a CV club that is very active in charitable giving.  We have an opportunity as a close knit community to demonstrate our appreciation to the people that have actively enhanced and maintained our facility, perhaps now the best club pickleball venue in the Valley.  We are hoping that members or the pickleball community will make a donation LARGE OR SMALL, that we will present to the Scholarship Program as a single “IR PICKLEBALL COMMUNITY” donation.  Please do not confuse this with donations for the events many of you have so generously made to attend the Weekend events in April.
