So, the guys won the doubles battle (we showed recently). But can Scott Moore (a Sr. National Champ) beat Simone Jardin ( the women’s national pro singles champ) in singles? Click on the link below and see the match with comments by our Palm Desert/Shadow Mountain pro, Morgan Evans.
There’s a lot of allegations going around these days about how powerful men treat the fairer sex, so I guess it’s apropos to suggest that powerful women in the pickleball arena can do some real damage to their male counterparts. If you click on the link below, you can watch the “world’s best” go after each other (even better than the Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs battle).
After some hesitation among some clubs, the Desert Pickleball League is about to be launched on January 4th, with play every Thursday afternoon thereafter until the end of March. Our Women’s Doubles team is co-captained by Kim Boestam and Andrea Rifkin, while the Men’s team is co-captained by Dean Wiese and Clark Shewfelt. With quality leadership like this, and the impressive talent of our players, this inaugural season of the League should be something to watch.
In addition to this new competition, we’ll be playing in inter-club matches about every two weeks, like we did last season. These matches are structured as combination of competitive efforts within a more social setting (several times we lunched with the other folks after dinking and banging our butts off).
Sooo, let’s get to the courts and prepare for the fight and fun. Also, we’ll be putting forth here some videos, like the Joe Baker’s one below. Click on it and listen to one of the most informative pickleball gurus (with explanations in the most careful monotone presentation ever invented).
Here’s Episode 2 of the audio recording of phoned in problems pickleballers have and the suggested solutions. So, put your newspaper down, turn off the TV and have a listen. Then, we’ll see you excel on the courts.
We have received news that the CBS Sports Network broadcast of the men’s and women’s finals from Nationals will now be on Saturday, December 23rd! So, as you’re getting the egg nog ready, you may want to tune in to these fast moving matches.*
In the mean time, here’s an answer to the question about pickleball being a game for geezers and geezer gals. But, but a ten year old?? Have a look.
One of our blog followers (thanks Jack Yeaton) just let us know that these finals are on CBS Sports, channel 594 today at 4pm PST (that’s in 15 minutes). I’m going to record it for later enjoyment.
Well, there’s lots of news as the season opens:
- the initial season of the Desert Pickleball League is in the organizational phase, with Indian Ridge planning to field a Men’s Doubles team (Dean Wiese and Clark Shewfelt as Co-Captains), a Women’s Doubles Team (Kim Boestam and Andrea Rifkin as Co-Captains), and two Mixed Doubles Teams (MJ Chapman and Sue Van Geel as Co-Captains). Starting in January, Men’s and Women’s teams play on Thursdays at 1pm and Mixed Doubles plays on Sundays at 1pm;
- the Desert Inter-club league also starts in January with matches scheduled every two weeks between a dozen or so clubs, with play likely to be on Saturday mornings or Tuesday late afternoons (Rod & Nancy Smith are Indian Ridge’s coordinaters);
- Open Play will continue this month at the scheduled times: Saturday & Sundays at 9-11am and Tuesdays & Thursdays at 4-6pm.
So, we Indian Ridge pickleballers have got to get our games ready for all these matches. We’ll be organizing some drills and maybe a clinic or two to help out in this regard. Stay tuned for what and when.
Oh, in the interim, we’ll include here some helpful tips on solving some of the perplexing problems pickleball presents. The link below discusses a few of these that players have complain about. Lend an hear by clicking on the link.
