Santa’s been here??

A good pickleball friend sent us this Holiday poem that you might enjoy.

“Christmas Pickleball Poem

Twas the night before Christmas
And out on the courts
Were all types of people
In tennies and shorts.
All of them beaming and shouting with joy.
Happy as children with a new Christmas toy.
Out of their bags, colorful paddles appeared.
To the kitchen they scurried, lined up, and cheered.
Let’s dink it and drop it, let’s volley and kill.
The balls started bouncing as if without will.
The sound from the paddles and balls as they rose moved all of the players to the tips of their toes.
Cross court and forward, balls started to fly
When appeared an old player with a wink in his eye.
Dressed in all red from his head to his toe.
A smile on his face and a warm, cheery glow.
0-0-2 he shouted as he served me the ball.
He moved like the wind, barely saw him at all.
Then all of a sudden, it was 11 to 0.
As we lightly touched paddles, he said he must go.
Before I asked where, he disappeared in a haze,
But I heard his farewell while still in my daze
“Keep playing and laughing and having your fun!
Merry Pickleball to all, my work here is done!”

[A Poem By Greg LaVelle]

We can get there….well sorta

The last season’s exhibition with world-class local pros, Marcin Rozpedski, Blake Wilcox, Scott Burr, and Morgan Evans….such fun to watch!

We seen some impressive development among our beginning pickleballers, but maybe it could be better. So, our complementary Saturday morning clinics are available to members who have taken one introductory clinic and want to take another step forward. We’ll spend some more time on the strategy of the game, the best positioning on the court and the most optimal shots to play at the time.  Come on over to the courts this Saturday at 8am for some valuable pointers and an hour of smart game playing.

You’ll want to view this infomercial…

Folks, This heads up is copied from the USAPA Newsletter:

“In case you missed the original showing, the special 1-hr. encore presentation of

the Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships from Indian Wells, CA

will air this Saturday on ESPNEWS at 1PM ET / 10AM PT.

The ESPNEWS broadcast was produced from over 16 hours of livestreamed content that originally aired on ESPN3 during the tournament week.  In case you missed any of the livesteam, all of these matches are available in their entirety on-demand within the ESPN3 website. Details for connecting and watching these matches on ESPN3 are available here on the Event website. These matches will remain on-demand on ESPN3 for a period of one year.

For those of you that watched the complete matches during the livestream, there will be no surprises for you as you watch the special 1-hr. ESPNEWS telecast.  The idea was to allow those who were following the tournament in real time (primarily members and pickleball fans) to watch these matches as they happened and in their entirety. By pulling the best-of-the-best content from the livestreamed content, ESPN was able to showcase the sport to the general public, primarily those who were not following the livestream.  This is also why ESPN wanted to include general rules, diagrams and other introductory elements within the show and also encouraged the commentators to engage in basic question and answer dialog throughout the show. Again, all of this was done intentionally to inform and educate those who may be watching pickleball for the first time. Think of it like a 1-hour infomercial for pickleball.

In closing, we hope you will take an hour out of your busy holiday weekend and watch (or at least set your DVR and record) the broadcast. If you missed the first airing, we think you will be impressed by the high-quality and professionalism of the ESPN production and agree that this will serve as a great promotion tool in our ongoing quest of growing the sport. “

Today was good!!!!!

The combined Plam Valley/Indian Ridge pickleballers before play in the first inter-club event of 2018/2019 season.

We not only looked good, we played good. In the attempt to try out a round-robin shootout format that tracks points won, as a forerunner to establishing a Indian Ridge ladder, we recorded the number of points won in the first round of Men’s and Women’s doubles. To nobody’s surprise, Dean and Kim picked up the most points of our players, both with 77.8% of the available points (oh, yeah, those Palm Valley guys had just a few more this time).

Anyways, we’ll consider further the appropriateness of doing more shootouts (maybe taking 3 or 4 of our Open Play courts now and then) to begin establishing a basis for an Indian Ridge pickleball ladder. The idea is to satisfy the interests and ambitions of members at every skill level, e.g. two years ago in Park City, I started on the lowest court of four, moved up in two weeks to court 2, and then on to court 1 before falling back to courts 2 and 3, where I found my comfort level (winning about  77% of available points). Me thinks most of our players will want more after once tasting well the goods.

Regarding the recent signup for the Women’s Doubles League team, this writer errored  by putting in a wrong email address for co-captain Kim Boestam. While she and Andrea Rifkin have some how already cornered the market for players, we’re repeating the link to Kim that should work for members still interested in playing in the League (no George, not for you).

I’m available for the Women’s Doubles League team.

Saturday, December 15…………

Folks,

We’re hosting the pickleballers from Palm Valley today at 9-11am, when we’ll need to use all courts.

Those of you who are playing may want to come a little early as we’ll start play close to 9am, so we’ll coordinate with the tennis players, who we’ll join for boasting, bragging, and snacks after play.  See you on the courts.

We need more participation………

Folks,

As mentioned recently, the Coachella Valley Grand Prix pickleball leagues are beginning in January and we need to put together our men’s/women’s/mixed teams ASAP. We need your participation, unless you’ve already sign up, so we can field:

  • Men’s Doubles teams in two leagues, one called the Premier League with team rosters of 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 rated players. The other is a newly-formed League of only 3.0 rated players, which is the largest class of players. These two Leagues will be playing matches usually on Thursdays at 1pm or 3pm here at Indian Ridge or at a nearby club, and they’ll be exciting playoff matches at the season’s end in late March;
  • Women’s Doubles team of 3.0 rated players that’ll also play their matches on Thursdays at 1PM here at Indian Ridge or at a nearby club; and a new
  • Mixed Doubles team that’ll play their matches on Friday afternoons at 1pm here at Indian Ridge or at a nearby club.

There is a modest $40 season fee we each have to contribute to run the Leagues, with a discounted fee of $70 if one wants to play in two Leagues (like the Men’s or Women’s Doubles and the Mixed Doubles).

So Indian Ridge pickleballers, let’s get involved and play some challenging pickleball with some of the best players in the Valley. Just click on one or more of the links below to sign up for a season of challenging fun, and ask any questions you might have. We don’t have much time, so let’s do it now!
